can be safe, fun and liberating!
* Wrap up warmly, windproof layers are good ontop of wicking under garments. Gloves, overshoes, a windproof skull cap under the essential helmet. Stout soled shoes.
* Fit as broad and knobbly tyres as possible to your bike. Mountain bikes will give you the best traction, but broad 700c tyres can also work safely. Beware of fitting too close to mudguards.
* Ride within your limits. Slow down in slippery conditions, keep as upright and maintain as straight a line as possible. Be aware of other road users - you may be under control but what is sliding towards you - keep as far away from cars as possible.
* Keep your bike clean and well lubricated, this will help protect from salt and stop control cables freezing.
* If the going gets too difficult, dismount and enjoy the walk.
